Is Blackjack The Same As 21?

Blackjack is a popular game in casinos, both the physical and virtual kind. But unlike many casino games, the players aren’t playing against each other but the dealer!

But is blackjack the same as 21? Yes, they are the same! Blackjack is the American version of Twenty-One (21). Both are played in the same manner, too, with one or more players competing against the dealer.

There are several versions of 21 games, too, with classic blackjack being one of them. Read on and get the basics about them!

Classic Blackjack

In classic blackjack, the players try to get a stronger hand than the dealer. Your hand of cards should be higher than the dealer’s hand, but it shouldn’t be more than 21. If it uses more than 21 points, it is a bust.

Is Blackjack The Same As 21?

The strongest hand in classic blackjack is a combination of a face card and an ace. Take note that all face cards have a value of 10, and all aces have a value of one or 11. The combo can only be matched but not beaten.

You can draw up to nine additional cards for a total of 11 cards. But the total hand value shouldn’t be more than 21. When you have the desired number of cards, you then stand (no more cards are drawn).

The dealer, on the other hand, will stand when his cards have a value of 17 and up. If he goes bust, then you will automatically win.

European Blackjack

It is a variation of classic blackjack with most of its rules like it, too. In European blackjack, the blackjack beats any other hand with a 21 value. During the game, you can request a “hit” so you can also get up to nine extra cards.

The dealer stands on hands with a 17 value. And the player automatically wins in case of a bust on his part. If he has a blackjack hand, the player’s original and doubled bets are lost. You, the player, will get the insurance on your hand when the dealer has an ace as an initial card.

Spanish Blackjack

Unlike classic and European blackjack, Spanish blackjack is played with the 48-card Spanish deck. The French 52-card deck can be used, but the four ten-spot cards aren’t used during the game. The values and specific rules are the same as in classic blackjack.

The dealer also hits on a 16 value and stands on a 17 value. Blackjack, or 21 on the first two cards, always wins with the payment being 3:2 regardless of the dealer’s hand.

There are many other variations including a single deck, pontoon, rummy, continuous shuffle, double exposure, and Atlantic City. These variations share many common rules, but it’s in the payment and insurance that their rules differ.
